Jan. 1, 2013: We generally avoid anchoring out or sailing overnight. But an occasional anchorage can be very special, as long as the seas calm and wind dies. We cannot cross the Little Bahama Bank from West End to the Abacos in a day and we had to have Ellen back on Grand Bahama to catch her flight on Jan. 4. We had anchored at Sale Cay last spring in Silver Girl and found this a wonderful anchorage and knew this could be a great stop under most conditions. We had checked the weather, if the wind stayed E and didn’t go SE it would be a great overnight sail. Brian, Cindy and daughter Laura on Aviva were ready to go as well so we would have two boats which always makes things more enjoyable and of course, safer.
We left the dock at 7:30 for our 7 hour run. We were able to sail for a couple of hours and then had to start the motor when we changed course.
Our anchorage couldn’t have been better. Once again, the seas were flat once we got in the protection of Sale Cay and we pulled out the dingy, inflated it, secured the 2 hp outboard and scooted around the harbor before dinner.
Sable looks good from the dingy and before our dinner Cindy and Brian scooted over in their dingy with their wine and appetizers. (Next time we’ll serve our own wine.)
Our dinner was fresh lobster that we bought from Lorenzo just before we left West End on Grand Bahama. Can’t get much fresher than this.
Morning looked like this, and we had a good run back to Old Bahama Bay at West End, Grand Bahama Island.
Just one more day on Sable.
