Continuing the discussion I initiated last week — Is not the answer to unemployment the creation of jobs, not government checks?

The debate over extending unemployment benefits has dragged on, and will continue to threaten the couple of million Americans for whom these modest checks make the difference between food on the table and hunger.

I would like to believe that racism in America is only a long-gone sad episode in our national history, and that we are at last free of its shame.

I have never been a big fan of papal pronouncements, at least not since the Vatican II statements instigated by John XXIII.
