Barbara Painter was born in Banner Elk, a very small rural town in the mountains of Western North Carolina. She attended Milligan College, a small school in Eastern Tennessee, and later graduate school at North Carolina State University. She worked as a teacher and later as a school counselor. She and her high school sweetheart have been happily married for almost 50 years. They have two daughters and four grandchildren.
