Momma’s been 92 for about 10 years now.
Sometimes I see her walking down the street ahead of me.
I call to her but she keeps walking.
Once she turned round. I didn’t recognize her.
I also hear her voice in crowds,
but she never says my name.
She is invisible.
Momma began to disappear
before she was 92.
Talking on the phone
I was on one path
she was on an old path.
Weather, brother, food
everyday the same.
A confused silence when I said — my world.
She sat in her rocker and rocked
Surrounded by everyone who didn’t rock.
I am disappearing now.
Each day I feel people aren’t seeing me
Today is more and more now
I am more and more then
When will I stop getting older?
78 … 80 … 82 …
What did I do today?
you ask.
I rocked
as others drifted by.
